A quick and capable document churner; just watch that toner cost
By William Harrel – August 11, 2020
THE BOTTOM LINE
HP’s LaserJet Pro M404dn is a speedy single-function monochrome laser printer with a strong feature set for the price. Just beware the toner outlay if you’ll push it to its limit month in, month out
PROS
- Small footprint
- Fast
- Strong connectivity options and smartphone integration
- Reasonable purchase price
- Auto-duplexing
CONS
- Somewhat high running costs
- Subpar photo output
A direct competitor to two 2019 Editors’ Choice recipients, Canon’s imageClass LBP226dw and Epson’s inkjet-based laser-alternative WorkForce Pro WF-M5299, HP’s LaserJet Pro M404dn hangs in some tough company. This $299.99 print-only monochrome laser printer is designed for medium-to-high-volume output in a small office or workgroup. Like its competitors, it prints well at a fast clip, though its grayscale photo output is slightly below average. But then, you wouldn’t buy this type of machine to print photos, anyway. Overall, the M404dn is a capable mono laser, but it does cost a bit more to use than many of its competitors.
