THE BOTTOM LINE
The quick, accurate Brother DS-740D portable document scanner is a great fit for scanning directly to your laptop over USB, but it’s overshadowed by a slightly more expensive sibling with lots more features and versatility.

Editors’ Rating: good
A manual-feed portable document scanner designed primarily for use on the road, Brother’s DSmobile DS-740D ($129.99) is a step down from our recent Editors’ Choice, the DSmobile DS-940DW. For its $50 savings over its fancier sibling, the DS-740D makes you give up a lot, including wireless and mobile connectivity, a built-in battery for use in the field, the ability to operate the scanner apart from a computer by saving your scans to a microSD card, and a few other features. Otherwise, the DS-740D is fast, accurate, and ideal for scanning to your laptop on the road.
